Despite having cut official diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979, the U.S. remains the island's chief diplomatic ally and source of military hardware and intelligence. Lai's victory was a setback for China’s efforts to bring Taiwan under its control. It goes against the expectation of global democratic communities and goes against the will of the people of Taiwan to uphold democratic values. Lai’s victory means the Democratic Progressive Party will hold the presidency for a third four-year term, following eight years under Tsai. Lai won a three-way race for president with 40% of the vote, less than the clear majority Tsai won in 2020.

Hong Kong/Taipei CNN —Former senior US officials reaffirmed “rock solid” American support for Taiwan in a visit Monday after the self-ruled island defied threats from China by electing a new president loathed by Beijing. “And we hope that the United States will continue to support Taiwan to deepen our cooperation in this area,” he said. An unofficial US delegation meets with Taiwan's President-elect Lai Ching-te and Vice-President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim in Taipei on January 15, 2024. Since then, the US has maintained close unofficial ties with Taiwan and is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself. Asked by reporters to comment on Taiwan’s election results Saturday, US President Joe Biden said: “We do not support independence.”

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Two former senior U.S. officials will arrive in Taiwan on Sunday for post-election talks and underscore the U.S. government's "longstanding interest" in peace across the Taiwan Strait, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei said. In a show of support for the government, a senior administration official said last week that President Joe Biden planned to send an unofficial delegation to the Chinese-claimed island. "As we have done previously following a Taiwan presidential election, the U.S. government has asked former senior officials to travel in their private capacity to Taiwan," AIT said, adding its U.S.-based Chair Laura Rosenberger would be accompanying. China has stepped up its military and political pressure against Taiwan over the past four years. Both have offered talks with China but been rebuffed.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan on Sunday condemned what it said were “fallacious comments” by China following the self-governing island's presidential and parliamentary election the previous day. The verbal sparring did not bode well for the future of Taiwan's relations with China under the winner, President-elect Lai Ching-te, or for China's relations with the United States. The institute is the de-facto U.S. Embassy, since the United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province and says that it should not even have a foreign ministry or any official relations with foreign governments. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its statement that "the Taiwan question is China’s internal affair.

Democrats argued that the results on Tuesday night showed abortion’s resonance even in some of the country’s most conservative areas. Support for the measure enshrining abortion rights was notably higher than the backing for the Democratic candidate for Senate last year, particularly in the suburban swing counties surrounding Columbus and Cleveland. The results will almost certainly require the State Supreme Court to invalidate a six-week ban with limited exceptions that passed in 2019. Republicans have been searching in vain for a successful message on abortion ever since the Supreme Court’s decision. For nearly a half-century, Republican candidates had simply proclaimed themselves “pro-life,” without delving into the details of what that meant.

In Ohio, a mostly red state, voters explicitly wrote into their state constitution a right to an abortion up until the point of fetal viability. An exit poll of Ohio voters found that 6 in 10 voters were still angry about the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson. But in its absence, they have created an electoral albatross that abortion rights advocates have hung on GOP candidates up and down the ballot throughout the nation. The Virginia legislative races were defined by abortion rights, as Democrats seemingly rejected the GOP push to institute a 15-week abortion ban in the Commonwealth, which currently allows abortions through the second trimester — or approximately 26 weeks. Beshear, who supports abortion rights, sought to paint Cameron as out of the mainstream on the issue.

Andy Beshear, defying the deep conservativism of his state of Kentucky and equally deep unpopularity of President Joe Biden, won reelection to a second term Tuesday, beating Republican Daniel Cameron. "This is to you, Daniel Cameron: To tell a 12-year-old girl she should have the baby of her stepfather who raped her is unthinkable. Daniel Cameron would give us none," the young woman says in the ad. Cameron amended his anti-abortion position to include exceptions for rape and incest, but that argument appeared not to sway Kentucky voters. The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday maintained 2023-24 Brazilian corn production at 129 million metric tons, identical to the initial May projection. Conab predicts Brazil’s second corn harvest, which supplies the country's exports, could fall nearly 11% on the year to 91.2 million tons. China, like the United States, is winding down its 2023-24 corn harvest. On an October-September basis, USDA sees 2023-24 Brazilian corn exports at 59 million tons versus 53.7 million in 2022-23, and U.S. shipments are pegged at 52.5 million tons in 2023-24 versus 43 million in 2022-23.

Hadley Duvall, the Kentuckian shown in the ad, sounded unmoved by Cameron’s expression of empathy, responding: “It wasn’t really to share my story just with him. It should be their choice.”The ad went viral after its release last month, putting the debate about abortion exceptions at the forefront of the Kentucky governor's race. In the ad, Duvall talks about having been raped by her stepfather when she was 12 years old. Beshear has denounced the near-total abortion ban as extremist, pointing to the lack of rape and incest exceptions. Duvall said Tuesday that she sees Cameron's support of the current ban as untenable.

Beshear's ad features an incest survivor who said Cameron's anti-abortion views would have left her without options. Cameron previously appeared to flip-flop over his opposition to rape and incest exceptions to bans. Cameron previously said that he supported Kentucky laws, neither of which has exceptions in the cases of rape or incest. In June, abortion rights advocates vowed to continue fighting the bans that continue to be in effect. In a major vote, Kentuckians in November 2022 rejected an anti-abortion effort that would have denied any state constitutional protections for abortion rights — one of a string of abortion rights victories since Roe was reversed.

Then, he sold the company and landed a VP of marketing job at another startup. Two soft skills helped him navigate that journey, he says: empathy and risk taking. At Kickstarter, Taylor recently implemented a four-day workweek for his employees, a risk that comes with pros and cons. For now, it's paying off, Taylor told Time in June: "We've been just as productive or even more productive with a four-day workweek." Other risks aren't worth taking, Taylor says.

But many conservatives would also say that it’s important to remember that an individual choice is just that — up to the individual. For birth control, it would entail paying out of pocket for the cost, which could be as low as $15 a month. Conservatives are also more likely to see birth control, in general, as an innovation that has had mixed effects on society. An overwhelming majority of American women have used birth control at some point, and 92 percent of Americans say it’s morally acceptable. This, along with the relatively high typical-use failure rates of the most traditionally popular forms of birth control, has disproportionately harmed women.

CNN —Temperatures in parts of the North Atlantic Ocean are soaring off the charts, with an “exceptional” marine heat wave happening off the coasts of the United Kingdom and Ireland, sparking concerns about impacts on marine life. Parts of the North Sea are experiencing a category 4 marine heat wave – defined as “extreme” – according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And in 2021, an extreme heat wave cooked around a billion shellfish to death on Canada’s West Coast. As climate change intensifies, marine heat waves are set to become more common. The frequency of marine heat waves has already increased more than 20-fold due to human-caused global warming, according to a 2020 study.

"The Democratic Party's united front in support of President Biden's reelection is unprecedented," said Julie Chavez Rodriguez, campaign manager for Biden-Harris 2024. Microsoft senior executives donated more to the Biden campaign during the primaries than any other large tech company. In the runup to 2024, these donors will play a key role in helping Biden raise cash amid an uncertain economy and tepid enthusiasm among Democrats over the 80-year-old president's decision to run again. Biden's campaign alone raised more than $1 billion during the 2020 cycle, with more than $700 million of that coming from online grassroots donations. Two fundraising events Biden held last month in New York raised more than $3 million, according to a person familiar with those totals.

LONDON, May 17 (Reuters) - For the first time ever, global temperatures are now more likely than not to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7F) of warming within the next five years, the World Meteorological Organization said on Wednesday. But that did not necessarily mean the world would cross the long-term warming threshold of 1.5C above preindustrial levels set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Partially responsible for boosting the chance of hitting 1.5C is an El Niño weather pattern expected to develop in the coming months. During this natural phenomenon, warmer waters in the tropical Pacific heat the atmosphere above, spiking global temperatures. The El Niño "will combine with human-induced climate change to push global temperatures into uncharted territory", said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a press statement.
